I am looking for an augmentative communication device for my mother, an ALS patient who has lost her ability to speak. The ipod does not have the volume that she needs when out in public where there is noise competition. She needs something portable. Is there a tablet that is lightweight with good volume playback that you would recommend? Thank you for your help.

It was great meeting you at the conference and thanks for such a wonderful post. I have to agree that the highlight of the conference for me was to meet some many people, like you, who I had only previously met online. What a great time!

cool software--text to speech technologies are normally so expensive so its great to see a easy to use and more affordable program.

That is an excellent point, and one that often gets overlooked in the discussion of using hardware not intended for assistive technology applications. No one solution is going to fit everyone, and the iPad, while appropriate for many, may miss the mark when it comes to non-ambulatory individuals. And while touchscreen PC's are fully featured, they lack the simplicity of the iPad. Also, iPads just look cool.

Depends on the user. I'd prefer a netbook for a child who is wheelchair bound, and would also use some of the simple software out there.

I'd use an ipad for everyone else.

Acapella voice is very good, I have experience with text to speech software Panopreter Plus (http://www.panopreter.com) on Windows, it reads txt files, rtf files, word documents, pdf files and web pages with Acapela voice, and converts the text to mp3 and wav files, the voice sounds very clear.

Thank you for posting about Smarty Ears. I just found this post. I just thought I'd clarify a few things... Smarty Ears is the company creting the apps for SLPs. The app you are refering to is called "Mobile Articulation Probes" and it was released on January 4th. A few months later we had a competition join us on the app store. Smarty Ears has now several apps- I would love to send you some free trial codes to try our apps and I would love to hear what you think? Thanks for the post!
